Acupuncture in Switzerland: reimbursement, first session and indications
Acupuncture performed by a physician is covered by basic health insurance (LAMal). When performed by a non-physician therapist recognized by ASCA or RME, it is covered by supplemental insurance. No prescription is required to consult an acupuncturist.
Procedure for the first session
The first consultation lasts 60 to 75 minutes. The practitioner will conduct an assessment based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine: observation, questions about your symptoms and general condition, and pulse taking. Fine, sterile needles are then inserted into specific points on the body for 20 to 30 minutes. The treatment is painless for most patients.
Common indications
Acupuncture is recognized for the treatment of chronic pain, migraines, stress, sleep disorders, nausea, and certain functional disorders. It is used as a complement to conventional medicine.
